english as an A level subject?

i had a talk with mdm norhani today, and i was wondering if i'm actually competent enough to study english as an A level subject. it's literature really, but they call it english. funny.. anyway i became nervous when i heard that the students actually do ONE book a WEEK. i mean like, well! i guess i can read a book in a week and complete all my notes lar, but that's if i do ONLY literature? what about my other subjects? my brain will just go haywire and i'll get myopia or something. argh! and i don't like the idea of studying shakespeare... it's in old english for goodness sake.. all those thee thou art etc. "

"o romeo romeo wherefore art thou romeo? deny thy father, and refuse they name; or, if thou wilt not, be but sworm my love, and i'll no longer be a capulet"

or is it catapult? nvm

anyway, mrs. koh's explanation went something like that.

"why are you romeo?" (note: it's not where are you romeo)
and the deny part onwards is basically how juliet wants romeo to disown his family. she herself will give up her own name just to be with him. some love tragedy thing but my point is, it's so complicating!

"it is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden; Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be. Ere one can say it lightens. sweet, goodnight! This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath, may prove a beauteous flower when next we meet"

and what about the stanza above? these are the only two quotes i actually memorised from the book. i hardly understand a word they're saying... but i seem to be more of an artsy person than sciency leh... anyone knows ANYTHING about the english course? fwah... should i even take it? i don't think i'm up for anything to do with science and math!

heelp!!

Err, actually hor, maybe Mdm Norhani was talking about Uni... that was where we did one book a week, and nobody walked through the book line by line with us one hor.

At 'A' levels, I think we did like three papers, and not that many books... but things have probably changed. And anyway, the teachers still guide you quite a bit in JC, so it's not that scary.

And yes, I still think you are pretty good at Lit... you just need a little more confidence, and as you grow older, your experiences in life will help you appreciate literature more... not just the subject, but literature (as in writing or as in books) in general.

oh UNI? that's a bit hmmm far... if i do decide to take english if i go somewhere, MUST i take lit again in uni? and if no one goes through the book, we're supposed to come up with our own notes?! independent studying?! then lecturers are there for.... what? confirmation?

changed for the better? =D maybe just two papers? hmmm.. it's an idea though... maybe i'll go try to find out more about it after my O levels! ookay, i'm off! thanks! =)

alamak, dear, you have been hit by comment spammers. Better switch on your word verification thing.

No lah, of course no need to take in Uni if you don't want. But if you want to take in uni, it would be good to have done it at 'A' levels of course.

Oh, and by the time you get to uni, you will be fairly proficient about reading the books and understanding them yourselves. In Uni, what you study is more like analyzing the KINDS of literature across a particular period or time frame, and the different types of writing of different authors in different eras. That's what the lectures are all about. So they discuss themes across boooks, and not only in one specific book. And they give you references, so you can read up on these themes and such in the reference books that you borrow from the library. Something like that.
